I'd love to know in which bridal publication you found the article you referenced. I think that having someone from the ADJA, NAME and any other national or regional DJ organizations contact the author with a rebuttal would be time well spent. It might also help if several-hundred professional wedding DJ companies from around the country responded to both the publication and the author as well. Thanks for a great blog post.

Mike...you are right on here! We (as DJs and MCs) have a responsibility to our clients and too often DJs are an after thought in the wedding planning process (maybe partially that they are worried about "cheesy"...just read the Knot boards for a little while and it becomes all too real).

I also feel that television and movies continue to prop up the "whine and cheese" machines. Wedding REALITY shows barely personify wedding reality (at least compared to Northeastern Indiana).

All too often (after the real damage has been done), people (guests, brides, wedding party members, etc) tell me stories of the last wedding they attended where they had a good (or not so good) time, BUT..."the DJ was drunk"..."the DJ wouldn't play the song requests"..."the DJ walked in front of his speakers with a cordless mic turned on"..."the DJ played sucky music"..."the DJ couldn't get the equipment to work right"...and on and on and on. And I won't even start on the Ipod experiences.

For many years now, we have partnered with other wedding professionals in order to educate couples on all aspects of their wedding planning. These seminars are helpful to the brides, BUT again, so many factors (budget, lack of funds, time, family pressures, etc) contribute to couples making choices they wished they could change (after the fact).

I also think that some marketing is misleading to brides like flashy titles ("Readers Pick 20XX, 20XX"..."People's Choice in 20XX") and rock bottom bridal show special prices.

If reception music is important to couples, many take the time and money to find a DJ that best suits their needs. When the music is a bit lower on the priority list, all kinds of shortcuts occur. I still don't understand why couples (or their parents) will pay $20, $35, $50, $100+ per person for a meal (plus service fees, gratuities, taxes, and venue rental)and want to find entertainment for $350.

We (as DJs and MCs) just have to find the most positive ways to shine as quality service providers and educate couples early enough in their planning process in order to stop the "WHINE AND CHEESE FACTORIES" from over-running the wedding world. Happy Planning!!

Great stuff! Photo Booth rentals are indeed becoming more and more popular. The great news is that this doesn't seem to be a fad but more of a trend which is gaining momentum. And Photo Booth rentals are limited to just weddings...any event with a group of people at it who are seeking entertainment and a great keepsake is a prime candidate for some photo booth fun!

Thanks for this post Mike. Here in Maryland most wedding venues hold 300 or less and my gear is set up for that; however, occasionally I run into the outside or larger venue and I always stress the importance of sound reinforcement to improve quality.
