Hi Dave,

I know we have a while to go before we really need to start going over songs for my wedding, but I was just wondering: what’s a money dance? Thanks!
V.

My response:

Hi V!

Thanks for asking! The Money Dance is a controversial wedding tradition! Formerly called a “Dollar Dance“, it’s a very old (early 20th century) ethnic wedding custom whereby the bride and groom would briefly slow dance (about 30 sec. or so) with guests for $1.00. The DJ introduces the dance and plays several appropriate slow songs. Songs that have a “friend” theme are better than those with romantic lyrics. The maid of honor collects for the bride and the best man collects for the groom. In addition to collecting the cash for you, the maid of honor and best man should act as gatekeepers to ensure that the dance with each guest is kept brief. Timing-wise, the money dance can be done any time after the cake cutting parent dances but prior to the end of the reception. The Money Dance ends when everyone has had a turn dancing with the Bride & Groom.

It’s purpose is to raise some extra cash for the honeymoon and give your guests an opportunity for some “alone time” with the Bride and/or Groom. Back in the 80′s and 90′s, the tradition gradually lost its popularity. But some ethnic groups and lower socio-economic classes still do it as tradition and to help the bride and groom financially. The name was changed from “dollar” to “money” because a dollar is worth practically nothing these days!

Advantages: you make some extra cash, you can dance and chat with many of your guests individually, and it’s a great photo opportunity.

Disadvantages: some people think it’s tacky or rude to ask guests for more money after they have already included a substantial sum with your card; and sometimes the dance goes on and on, creating a boring block of time for the other guests.

IMO the money dance is not very popular around here; I probably do one or two of these all year! But, it’s your choice! Ask your fiance, friends and family, especially the older ones, what they think. Then, if you want it, we can introduce it and play appropriate music for it.

Best regards,
Dave

Well today, it is common for not only the bride and groom to have their own introduction music, but the entire bridal party.

The right Dinner Music is as important as the right Dinner!

While planning a dinner event, the host thinks about a number of things: The food itself, decor, special needs/desires of guests, but probably one of the most important things is the atmosphere–fun, festive, enjoyable for all. And one of the areas where you can make the atmosphere fun, festive and enjoyable for all is the type of music that is played.

As the dinner hosts at your event-your wedding reception (these ideas apply equally to any party or event where one plans to serve dinner as part of their event), the music is limited only to the Bride and Groom’s imagination and the following are suggestions to help you set a fun, festive and enjoyable time for all:

Have a Variety of music to appeal to a variety of musical pallets. This is very true at wedding receptions. One way to address this is play sets between dinner courses that appeal to as many individuals as possible. One way I like to start a set during dinner is to have our happy couple come on the dance floor and joined by their guests to dance to Frankie Valli’s Can’t Take My Eyes Off You. This sets a romantic mood and keeps things fun and interesting for all;

Play songs during dinner that may get passed on during prime time dancing. Many people have a favorite song that they would like to hear, but it’s not exactly the perfect “dance” song. One piece that comes to mind is Billy Joel’s Scenes from an Italian Restaurant. A great song, but not one I would play during prime time dancing. I performed at a reception last year where the bride and groom expressed that they would love to hear a set of 80′s dance music from artists like New Order and Information Society during dinner time as a large number of their guests enjoyed music from that era. It was a great success at that reception. Again, the music is limited to your imagination only!! Be yourself and let your reception music reflect your individual taste and spirit.

While I have touched on two areas, dinner music may address other areas like special requests for guests (playing your parents’ wedding song for them) or music related to a themed event, like a tropical or holiday event.

Here is a small list of some of our favorite suggestions for great Dinner Music Program Enjoy!!!

I can’t begin to tell you how many times I’ve heard people complain about their DJ not playing the right dance music at their wedding reception. But what exactly is “the right music”? When asked, brides say they want music that’s fun and danceable. But when I ask for specific song requests, my clients don’t always know the titles and artists’ names.

Most good DJ services will provide an extensive list of song selections which may or may not be right for your guests. Overwhelmed by the hundreds (or even thousands) of songs to choose from, the bride & groom will choose some of their favorites or they’ll just leave it up to their DJ. An excellent DJ will be able to quickly read the crowd and determine which songs to play and when to play them. He or she will have some gems (secret weapons if you will) that will pack the dance floor and keep it packed all night.

Now, some critics might say, “Yes, I know…the same cheesy songs that are overplayed at every wedding reception in the country”. And some brides & grooms demand that their DJ NOT play any of these songs and play their eclectic favorites instead. Then, on their wedding day, they wonder why no one (including themselves) is dancing. But there is a reason why these so-called “cheesey” songs are still played. They are played because THEY WORK!!

Some songs are classic and work every time for every wedding because they appeal to all ages and are fun to dance to. The key is having a DJ who can feel the vibe of the crowd and then give the right mix of classic and newer music to keep the dance floor crowded. This takes a great deal of knowledge and experience in doing hundreds of weddings. So to help you get started, here are some of my top wedding “gems” to keep your dance floor sizzling!

Far less couples are having the Garter / Bouquet tradition at their wedding receptions. Unfortunately, the elimination of this event leaves a hole in the reception that is not always filled by dancing alone.

A new tradition has emerged, and it is known as ” The Anniversary Dance. “

Where the Garter / Bouquet involves single guests, the Anniversary Dance highlights married couples.

Here is how it works……….

First, our DJ calls for every married couple to join the bride and groom out on the dance floor. A romantic, slow song is played and couples dance together. At the first chance, our MC will ask for all couple married just 5 years or less to exit the dance floor. Everyone else remains and continues to dance.

The next call is for 10 years followed by 15 and so on, and so forth. After a few minutes, the dance floor has been narrowed down to only a few select couples who all have many years of married experience.

Finally, towards the conclusion of the song, one final couple remains dancing and are declared winners of the Anniversary Dance! Our DJ invites the crowd to give them a huge round of applause, and to finish things off, the bride and groom are called out to join them.

This is the fun part………

The bride and groom will now honor their winners, and it is a nice touch for our newlyweds to present flowers to the woman, and a bottle of wine to the gentleman. For a grand fanale’, our DJ will ask the winning couple for advice directed to the bride and groom. Obviously, the guests of honor are newlyweds, and can really benefit with great advice from such an experienced couple.

Believe me, you can get some great lines as this moment is purely spontaneous!

* Great songs for the anniversary dance *

* Remember When – Alan Jackson

* Through The Years – Kenny Rogers

* What A Wonderful World – Louis Armstrong

* As Time Goes By – Jimmy Durante’

* Colour My World – Chicago

When clients plan a wedding or any event that requires music to be played during a cocktail or social hour, they usually do not think about the music played during this time period.

When clients plan a wedding or any event that requires music to be played during a cocktail or social hour, they usually do not think about the music played during this time period. Quite frankly, I would not think of that either if I was not already a wedding entertainer. Cocktail hour is, more times than not, an after thought. In fact, most brides and grooms never even attend cocktail hour as they are out taking pictures. I would think that most of our Music In Motion clients say to themselves……… ” Our DJ knows what to play during that time. I trust him! ”

There are many different approaches to take, the most popular being smooth jazz. Artists like Paul Hardcastle, The Sax Pack, Fourplay, Dave Koz and Richard Elliott to name a few are excellent selections. This instrumental style can be combined with vocal music from artists like Michael Buble’, Billy Joel, Norah Jones, Sade, and Diana Krall. I like to set a romantic, but upbeat theme with the music during cocktail hour.

Of course, you may want more traditional songs for cocktail hour from artists like Frank Sinatra, Louis Armstrong, Etta James and Dean Martin or perhaps you have a ocean front event, which would certainly benefit from a tropical/island theme with steel drum /calypso music. Other clients have requested a 50′s ” Doo Wop ” program or even classical music.

What ever your taste and style, the key is to be unique and HAVE FUN! Remember that we are here to assist you with music planning. Feel free to discuss this with myself or any of our entertainers at Music In Motion as we are ready to make your event one to remember from start to finish!!
